The New Jersey Devils and Cory Schneider might be parting ways and it is sad to see but the prime of his career just didn’t match the team’s prime.

The New Jersey Devils have announced that Cory Schneider has been placed on waivers for the purpose of sending him to the AHL’s Binghamton Devils. They acquired Louis Domingue via trade a few days ago and he has been recalled to the Devils. MacKenzie Blackwood has played well lately and it looks like the tandem of Blackwood and Domingue is going to be it for a while. It is sad to see because Cory Schneider really used to be one of the greats.

The prime of his career just didn’t really match the Devils. He was an elite goalie during a time where the rest of the roster was bad. You can even argue that he was so good that he kept them from getting one of Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel. He was a Vezina Trophy caliber goalie in 2015 but the team wasn’t good enough to support him. They ended up being a bottom ten team but didn’t really have a chance at a generational talent at the top of the draft.

Now here we are in 2019 and the team as a whole is vastly improved. They are much faster, much more skilled, and most importantly much younger. They are a team that many believe can win more than they lose but it is impossible unless you get really good goaltending. It is hard to say that Cory Schneider has been bad because the defensive structure around him isn’t exactly favorable but Blackwood has been fine. There is no doubt that his game has taken a serious dip over the past three seasons and it is sad to see because he has been a great New Jersey Devil both on and off the ice.

There is no guarantee that he will be claimed. If he clears he will be Binghamton’s goalie for a while and perhaps he could find his game. If he does well down there and one of Blackwood or Domingue struggle, there could eventually be a recall. There is also a chance that he gets claimed and is a member of a new organization by tomorrow. We will be watching to see what happens but no matter what we support Cory Schneider the person.
