New Jersey Devils: Get To Know Louis Domingue
The New Jersey Devils have a new goaltender in the mix named Louis Domingue and he is probably going to get his first start with the team this weekend.
It was pretty clear that MacKenzie Blackwood was emerging as the main guy for the New Jersey Devils but nobody expected them to put Cory Schneider on waivers in favor of Louis Domingue. It isn’t an easy spot for Domingue to be in but that is the way it has to be. Schneider cleared waivers and is now a member of the Binghamton Devils. If there were an injury to Domingue or Blackwood then Schneider will likely be on his way back up.
So who is Louis Domingue? He was traded to New Jersey on November 1st, 2019 for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was one of the best backups in the NHL during the 2018-19 season that saw his team be one of the greatest regular season teams in NHL history. He went 21-5-0 with a .908 save percentage and 2.88 goals-against average. The record is fantastic but he was backing up the Vezina Trophy winner and had an elite team playing in front of him.
The numbers outside of the record are good but not something you would expect from a goalie who was 21-5 but it got the job done. The fact of the matter is that his average numbers are worlds better than the numbers that Cory Schneider was putting up this year. He isn’t going to save the day by any means but if he is a competent backup to Blackwood while Schneider figures it out in the AHL, then it will be a smart move by the Devils.
The Devils have a back to back tonight and tomorrow. They play the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings over the two nights. The Penguins are the better of the two teams by far so the wise decision would probably be to let Domingue get his feet wet against the Red Wings. Either way, the Devils are going to need him to play well in order for them to get back into the race this season. There is no doubt that goaltending has been a bit of an issue this year and hopefully, this move can help them become more stable in the blue paint.
