The New Jersey Devils need to finally make a major change before this season gets even more out of hand. The team is bad, and there is no excuse for it anymore.

Something has to give for the New Jersey Devils organization. They were absolutely demolished by the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. They were down 5-0 after the first period was over. It is the first time that the Devils have given up five goals in the first period since 1993. A team that has three Stanley Cups had zero the last time they had that bad of a first period. This team has turned into a disgusting disgrace and something needs to change and fast.

They don’t have any excuses about trying to gel with a bunch of new players anymore. The calendar has flipped to December, and teams pretty much are what they are at this point. They are not going to get any better if they don’t make a change. This is a horrid style of play. They allow superstar players like Jack Eichel to sit alone in front of the net and don’t create enough scoring chances for themselves.

Nico Hischier scored a goal, which is a positive note from him, but other than that this was one of the worst games in team history. It is time to fire head coach John Hynes. The team is so clearly lost and can’t seem to do anything right. They added in all of this talent over the summer and have done absolutely nothing with it. They need someone who can recapture the attention of the players and get them playing a style of game that fits the roster.

Timing is odd right now because they play the Golden Knights the very next day, but it almost doesn’t matter at this point. The need to do something right away. If it isn’t after this horrid game against the Buffalo Sabres, then it should very much be after they inevitably lose to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night. It is a shame that the season has come to this, but here we are. There is nothing the team can do about the past now but they can change the future. Changes have worked wonders for other teams, so why can’t it work for the Devils?

Vegas is one of the elite teams in the NHL. They haven’t fully played up to their potential yet but their roster is loaded with stars like William Karlsson, Mark Stone, and Max Pacioretty. The Devils are going to need to somehow be so much better if they plan on even keeping that game close. It is hard to say for sure if they will have a new coach by then but it is probably the right move at this point.
