Will Butcher

This one seems like a serious long shot, but it’s far from impossible. The New jersey Devils re-signed Will Butcher in the offseason to a three-year deal. He’s making a decent salary, coming in a $3.73 million per season. It had the makings of paying a player before he really breaks out. However, he has not exploded offensively or defensively like we would have hoped.

We’re not terribly worried that he won’t work out, we’re just thinking the Devils could use that money to spend big in the offseason on Torey Krug. However, there’s not much else behind him on the market for left-handed defensemen, so that’s not the best strategy. If it doesn’t work, then you’re in bad shape.

So, basically, unless they have a really good plan, or they someone just switch left-handed defensemen, this would be a weird move. Trading Will Butcher takes away from the team’s biggest weakness. There’s no way they can do that without replacing him in the same move.

That doesn’t make it impossible. We have no idea what the Devils are going to do at this NHL Trade Deadline. The team can literally do anything because they have an interim GM and an interim head coach. They could very easily move just about anyone. Anyone, including…
