Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have one of the all-time great 1-2 punches in the middle of the ice. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were at one point, the two best players in the National Hockey League. It was remarkable that a team managed to get those two guys on the same team driving two separate lines. Now, they are still elite but some other players have joined them in that window of best players in the league category.

When the Penguins won back to back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, they had something different than the other years of the Crosby/Malkin era. That X-factor was the third line of Carl Hagelin, Nico Bonino, and Phil Kessel. Bonino was the third line center that was able to do it all for them in all three zones.

A guy like Travis Zajac might be able to do stuff like Bonino still. Bonino has moved on to Nashville so they could use another guy like that in that role. Zajac isn’t collecting points in bunches this year, but he does all of the little things that are allowing Nikita Gusev and Blake Coleman to be successful on his line. He would be a very solid addition for the Penguins. He might even say yes to them because it would give him a legit chance at winning the Stanley Cup.
