The New Jersey Devils have seen some great offensive play from Damon Severson over the past few weeks. He is now on an impressive point streak.

The New Jersey Devils had an unimpressive win over the lowly Detroit Red Wings. It was fun to watch the team win but Detroit is awful. As bad as the Devils have been this season, the Red Wings make them look elite. The Red Wings are now 14-41-4 and have 32 points. There are about to finish one of the worst single seasons by an NHL team ever.

One thing that is a positive from the game is Damon Severson. He has had his issues during the early part of his NHL career but he deserves a little bit of respect. Of course, he is not a perfect player but the offensive production he provides doesn’t grow on trees. His assist on Andy Greene‘s game-tying goal extended his point streak to eight games. He tied Brian Rafalski for the longest points streak by a Devils defenseman since 2000. It has been a pretty nice stretch for him.

Severson now has seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points in 56 games. He, of course, leads all Devils defenseman in scoring. Only Kyle Palmieri, Nico Hischier, Nikita Gusev, and Blake Coleman have more points than him amongst everyone. Severson also seems to have benefited from the scoring change earlier this season as he has 20 points in those 30 games. Perhaps, he can be even better next season with a full season fo a new coach.

Severson could play himself into being a part of the future long term. There are a lot of fans who despise him but if he were to continue racking up points like this, they would change their attitude towards him real quick. He was good against the Red Wings, especially in the third period. It would be nice to see him continue to develop. Defensemen take a little longer sometimes and hopefully this is another one of those times.

Severson and company are back in business tonight when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes are in a playoff push right now. They are four points behind the Philadelphia Flyers who are tied for the final Wild Card spot. This is a huge game for them as they try to get back to the playoffs for the second year in a row. The Devils are going to have some fun trying to play spoiler here.
