The New Jersey Devils were given yet another makeover on Sunday as two popular pieces are on the move while the team played in the process.

The New Jersey Devils and their fans have been through a lot this season. They went in with all the hype but another bad season has led them to fire their coach, general manager, and trade some significant players. Taylor Hall was traded back in December, but the team made two more significant trades yesterday.

About an hour and a half before game time, they announced that they have traded their captain Andy Greene to the New York Islanders for a second-round pick and prospect David Quenneville. Then, during the game, it came out that they traded Blake Coleman to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a first-round pick and prospect Nolan Foote. That first-round pick is the Vancouver Canucks original pick before they gave it to Tampa Bay for J.T. Miller.

The Devils then went down 0-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in this game that had to be tough for the players to participate in. They showed resiliency and fought all the way back to win the game 4-3 in a shootout. It was a crazy day for anyone who is involved with this team.

Andy Greene was one of the great defensemen in the team’s history. He suited up for the team for 14 seasons where he played in 923 regular-season games, 50 playoff games, and was the captain for a few seasons. He was with the team through some very good times and some very bad times. It ended with trade but now he gets to go compete for the playoffs with the New York Islanders. He is reunited with Lou Lamoriello who was the Devils GM for a very long time.

Blake Coleman is a rising star in the NHL. He was drafted by the Devils and became a homegrown great player. He was one of the better players on the team all season long. He had 21 goals and 10 assists for 31 points in 57 games this season. Now he will go to the Tampa Bay Lightning who has a legit chance to win the Stanley Cup. Coleman will slide in perfectly in their middle-six and impact their penalty kill as well. This is a great addition for a team looking to finally get over the hump.

The fact that an elite team like Tampa Bay was willing to give up a high-end prospect and a first-round pick for Coleman says a lot about what he can bring to a contender. It is a shame that he wasn’t able to see this trough with the Devils but it is what it is. It is time for this team to start building back up again to get back into the playoffs.
