The New Jersey Devils are going to make the seventh selection in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The New Jersey Devils weren’t as lucky in the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery as they were in the last two times they were in the lottery. They fell down one spot and are going to make the seventh selection in the 2020 NHL Draft. It would have been nice to see them move into the top three, but it wasn’t meant to be this year. There are plenty of great players that are going to be available to them.

There will be no Alexis Lafreniere, Quinton Byfield, or Tim Stutzle, but there is a surplus of options for them. The rankings from 4-8 vary on a lot of people’s draft boards across North American and even the world. There are names like Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Alexander Holtz, and Cole Perfetti that will go in that 4-8 range. Either way, the Devils are going to add a really nice player to their organization that they will hopefully become a part of the core for a decade or more.

If they go with Drysdale because he is the best player available, they will be adding the best defenseman in the entire draft. Everyone knows that the Devils need help on the defensive end. The issue is that he might not be NHL ready for a while but you never know. A positive would be that they are adding a high-end defensive prospect to the mix to join the likes of Ty Smith and Kevin Bahl.

As far as the other three, they are forwards that would join Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier as the pieces that the team builds around for a long time. It would be especially nice if the three players could create tremendous depth on this team as they look to continue building. When the Devils get up there to make the pick, it is extremely important that they go on to make the best pick possible for this team.

This is a pick that they absolutely need to hit on. The top pick was won by a team that will lose in the “play-in” round so we just have to hope that it isn’t the Arizona Coyotes. Then we have to hope that the Vancouver Canucks defeat the Minnesota Wild. If all of those things happen, the Devils will have three picks in the first round. Hitting on those could go a long way for this team. This night wasn’t the best outcome by any means but it could be much worse.
