Mitch Marner would look great in New Jersey Devils colors one day.

The New Jersey Devils are watching the playoffs at home for the second-straight season. They failed to meet pretty much everyone’s expectations after an offseason of hype fueled by the acquisitions of Jack Hughes, P.K. Subban, and Nikita Gusev. They didn’t score enough and they couldn’t defend well. They need to get more talent if they want to turn this around, and it could be out there after the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated after another disappointing season. It wouldn’t be a simple trade, but they can look at forward Mitch Marner.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were just bounced from the playoffs before they even began. They lost the play-in series to the Columbus Blue Jackets and were embarrassed as a result. They got it to a game five but didn’t play awesome in that game five. They have so much more talent than the Blue Jackets but they don’t even come close to working as hard as them. As a result, they might be looking to make a change.

If the Leafs wanted to shed some salary so they can fill in some other spots in their lineup with different attributes, moving Marner might be a legit option. He is an amazingly talented scoring winger and he is effective in all situations (power play, short-handed, even strength). Because he is so dynamic, he would be perfect for a centerman like Nico Hischier who is brilliant in all three zones. They would be able to get the most out of each other’s skillsets.

This is a deal that the Maple Leafs would only consider if they can get themselves a nice player in return. The Devils also have a surplus of draft picks that can help sweeten the pot. The Devils don’t have any defensemen that are number ones anymore but they do have a few guys who could really go to the Maple Leafs and help out their defensive depth.

This is the type of thing that is a longshot among longshots, but you honestly never know in today’s NHL. The Maple Leafs are probably pretty tired of losing early year after year despite the fact that they believe they are a Stanley Cup contender. When they signed John Tavares in free agency, they were supposed to take the next step and they haven’t. If Mitch Marner is the odd man out, as a result, the Devils shouldn’t hesitate to go for him.
