The New Jersey Devils need a second goalie who plays well.
The part of the New Jersey Devils fanbase that has been watching the team for a very long team is used to good goaltending. They had Martin Brodeur, who is the greatest goalie who ever lived, followed by Cory Schneider, who for a long time was one of the best goalies in the NHL. Schneider has since fallen off for reasons that are hard to explain. However, in 2019-20, Mackenzie Blackwood was awesome.
As good as Blackwood was, they need someone else to help him out. Last season, he went 22-14-8 on a team that went 28-29-12 as a whole. The Devils were dead last in the Metropolitan Division. They were the only team from the division that wasn’t invited to the bubble when the pause ended because of how bad they were. A lot of the blame can be put on the state of the backup goaltender.
Hopefully, Blackwood is able to be accompanied by another goalie that is going to give them a real chance to win. That could be the case but they have some decision making to do. They need to get this straight before the new season starts. There are a few ways they can go about this but they need to make sure they evaluate things right.
It isn’t going to be easy to bring in the right guy. The Devils aren’t going to be that good defensively in all likelihood, so whoever they bring in needs to be ready for that. These are the three options for them as they look for that number two (or more) guy:
