This would be a wild trade after all the trouble to acquire the big-name defender and even bigger personality last season. P.K. Subban had a terrible year in New Jersey, and this would be the least likely trade and the highest risk for the Jets. At $4.5 million, he would be a good addition instead of the huge $9 million price tag for three years which would make it a decent trade.

His contract ending in two more seasons is really the window the Jets have to push for it at their best. Hellebuyck will be 30 at that time, Blake Wheeler will be 36, and Mark Scheifele is turning 30. While they could all still be good players, or in Scheifele’s case likely still a great player, now is the time to make a real push for them. If Subban got it together, it would be huge.

The real part of this however is the seventh-overall pick this year. This virtually guarantees them one of Alexander Holtz, Lucas Raymond, or Marco Rossi to slide into Laine’s spot in a year or two. Any of these players could be nearly as good as Laine, and it fills a big need right now while giving them more breathing room in the salary cap. This would be the riskiest trade for both teams by far, with either side having a chance of looking back and thinking how did we pull it off.
