Trade One

In a deal like this, the New Jersey Devils are a team that gets what they need and they take on a big contract. Vince Dunn would come into their lineup at 24 years old (he will be 24 by the time the new season begins) and be one of the top guys. You can even make the argument that he would be the best two-way guy on New Jersey’s blue line. They are instantly better just from that alone.

If they took on Alexander Steen, they would be adding a depth forward who makes a lot of money. Steen use to be a very good player and used to be a very good goal scorer. He isn’t that guy that he once was playing in the Blues’ top six way back when, but he would provide a great boost to the Devil’s bottom six. He makes 5.75 million against the cap but the Devils would only have to deal with it for 2020-21. However, the Blues would feel tremendous relief from losing that $5.75 million for one year.

It’s not like the Blues are giving Dunn away in this deal. Jesper Boqvist had an up-and-down year split between the NHL and AHL, but he is loaded with skill. He was a 2nd-round pick for a reason and should be able to be a good NHL player. The second-round pick from the New York Islanders (Andy Greene trade) isn’t too shabby for them either. This is a trade that gives each team something it needs.
