New Jersey Devils Should Try A Colorado Rockies Throwback Jersey

The Devils should do something different than the red and green alternate.

Adidas announced new “Reverse Retro” jerseys for every team. The New Jersey Devils were very predictably the red and green alternates they had when they first came into the league. It looks like it is going to be heavy on the green. There was already a joke that the other retro jerseys the Devils have worn were Christmas tree jerseys, but this is taking that to another level.

Of course, people are still into it. The point by Adidas was to give a reason for another color scheme that most teams haven’t seen before. The Devils have never had green as the primary color. Despite that, calling it “Reverse Retro” gives Adidas more ability to get creative. It looks like when they unveil the full jersey this week, it’s going to be very green. Like, very, very green.

Most people looking at the jersey are just up in arms because the Devils will never get a black jersey. It’s been something that has been on the minds of Devils’ fans for years, but Lou Lamoriello wasn’t really into alternate jerseys, and Adidas doesn’t seem too interested in adding yet another black jersey to their selection process.

So, instead of asking for something that seems like it is never going to happen, why not go for the retro and get a jersey that hasn’t been done in a long time? The Devils haven’t worn the Colorado Rockies throwbacks in a very long time (possibly ever). It was a short-lived time in Denver, but it was significant for the franchise that eventually became an NHL powerhouse.

Next. Devils Possible First-Line Combinations. dark

The Rockies were only there from 1976 to 1982. It wasn’t a history worth exploring, which is probably why the New Jersey Devils aren’t that interested in honoring the Rockies. However, this is all about a marketing opportunity. The Rockies’ jerseys are fun. The logo is actually awesome. The blue with the yellow and red striping is a good combination.

Putting the names “Hughes” or “Subban” on those gorgeous colors would get people buying. The Devils only have to wear it once to make it a marketing item. Bring in some former Rockies players, let Chico Resch host the event, and then the Devils can wear the throwback. Afterward, a Nico Hischier throwback is coming to the Villano household.

The Colorado Avalanche may not like another team wearing a Colorado jersey, but they’ll get over it. Let them wear a Quebec Nordiques jersey and call it even.
