It is time for the New Jersey Devils to turn the team over to Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier.

The New Jersey Devils are a team that has had a lot of great players over the course of their history. They have had Hall of Famers like Martin Brodeur, Scott Stevens, and Scott Niedermayer along with some other just great players like Zach Parise, Ilya Kovalchuk, and Adam Henrique. We should always celebrate players who helped make the Devils great in the past while recognizing who’s team it is in the present.

Right now, they are about to completely turn this team over to their two number one overall picks. Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes are the kids that the Devils want to lead the way. They have two completely different skillsets and that what makes it exciting when you think about what they can do together.

Hischier is a two-way centerman that can be an all-purpose player. He might be a 70 point guy in his prime but he has the potential to be one of the elite three zone players in the league. Meanwhile, Hughes is an offensive player. He didn’t have the point totals we were hoping for in 2019-20 but he did show flashes of brilliance. He clearly has the skills to become one of the top point producers in the history of the team.

There are other good young players coming like Jesper Bratt and Alex Holtz but the two key pieces are 86 and 13. Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac will also assume leadership roles again when they hit the ice which is nice to have but the next wave is about to take over. It might take another year or two for them to really hit their prime but 2020-21 is the first step to them taking over the team.

Hot. Remembering the three Devils' offseason moves. light

They might have not lit the league on fire right away like recent first overall picks like Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid but that isn’t the norm. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche are probably very happy that they waited patiently for Steven Stamkos and Nathan MacKinnon respectively. It doesn’t happen overnight in the NHL for most players but the future is bright for the Devils. This team belongs to Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes now so hopefully, they take advantage of the opportunity.
