The 2021 Stanley Cup Final isn’t even over yet, but the New Jersey Devils already have the worst odds to win the 2022 Stanley Cup. Obviously, it’s incredibly early to be considering who might win it all next season. It’s what we like to call a “sucker’s bet”. Every team has hope right now, even if it is fleeting. So, if a Devils fan were to see that the odds for them to win next season’s Stanley Cup are literally 100/1, their mind wanders to buying an island with their winnings.

The Devils are hardly alone. The Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, and even the Seattle Kraken (who don’t even have a roster yet) are all sitting at those 100/1 odds. It’s no surprise, really. The Devils have once again finished a season near the bottom of the standings.

The New Jersey Devils now have the worst odds to win Stanley Cup in the NHL.

There are some interesting names on the list. The Vancouver Canucks were close to as disappointing as the Devils this season, but their odds are twice as good. The Philadelphia Flyers were once the odds-on favorite to win the East Division, but a rough season by Carter Hart has them sixth in the division at 33/1. On the Devils and Blue Jackets have worse odds. The Carolina Hurricanes are the only traditional Metropolitan Division team with better than 20/1 odds.

Neither of the two teams currently in the Stanley Cup Final are the favorites to win it all next season. The Tampa Bay Lightning are actually third, behind the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights. The Montreal Canadiens are eighth.

This all comes before all the offseason moves. If the Devils sign Dougie Hamilton and trade for Filip Forsberg and also give Cale Makar an offer sheet that he accepts, we’re sure the Devils odds would go up. Unfortunately, that’s all very unlikely. The Devils moves probably won’t move the needle very far. This team lives and dies by the progression of Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes. If Hughes takes a massive step forward and Hischier actually looks like the two-way star he was moving towards earlier in his career, then maybe the Devils can be a playoff contender. Let’s get there first.
