The 2021 NHL Draft is officially underway. The Buffalo Sabres kicked it off by selecting Owen Power with the first overall pick. The Seattle Kraken followed by selecting Matthew Beniers with their first-ever pick in franchise history. With the third overall pick, the Anaheim Ducks selected Mason McTavish which is a bit of a surprise. That left the New Jersey Devils with options when they came up at four. Of course, it felt like it was between Luke Hughes and William Eklund.

They decided to select Luke Hughes. Of course, he is the younger brother of their star centerman Jack Hughes. The two are going to be teammates whenever Luke gets the call up to the National Hockey League. It is going to be a lot of fun to watch when it happens.

Luke Hughes has been the player that New Jersey Devils fans have wanted for a long time. Jack has been developing tremendously throughout his years with the organization and he has a chance to be a superstar.

Unlike his brother Jack, and more like his brother Quinn, he is going to go play college hockey following his draft year. It is going to be fun seeing him develop even more as he prepares for his NHL career. The good thing is that he will be surrounded by so much talent at Michigan. Owen Power, Matthew Beniers, and Kent Johnson (5th overall to Columbus) will all be there with him.

The New Jersey Devils are going to love having Luke Hughes in the organization.

Hughes is a different style defenseman than his older brother Quinn. He is more of a two-way style guy that relies heavily on his skating. There is a good chance that he is the best skater in the entire draft. When things are all said and done, the Devils are going to be very happy with this selection.

It is more than just the family ties here. That is a big positive but Luke is also a very good player. He also plays a position of need for the Devils as they try to take the next step. With other great defensemen like Ty Smith, Kevin Bahl, and Damon Severson there to help him out, the future could be very bright. Hopefully, this is the first night of a great career for Luke Hughes. It is the pick most Devils fans wanted and now they got it. When he takes that first shift at the Prudential Center, fans are going to go crazy.
