The New Jersey Devils are well underway in Training Camp. In fact, they have their first preseason game tonight against the Washington Capitals. It is going to be the first time that the Devils have played a game against another opponent since the final game of the 2020-21 regular season. We have been waiting for a while now but they are finally back.

On Tuesday, the Devils had a scrimmage during practice that was broadcasted online. Team Red played against Team White in a very fun game. Studs like Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt had great games for Team Red which was a lot of fun to watch. In particular, they created a goal towards the end where Hischier made a sweet feed to Bratt in front who buried a bar down goal.

There was a combination on Team White, however, that stood out early in the game. Jack Hughes played on a line with Tomas Tatar and Yegor Sharangovich. There is a chance that Sharangovich scores 30 goals and leads the team this year. However, it was Hughes’ chemistry with Dougie Hamilton that was very interesting.

Hamilton is the prized superstar free agent that New Jersey landed over the summer. Now, we are just seeing what he is able to do on the ice in a Devil’s sweater. He is ultra skilled and one of those “true” number one defensemen that you hear about in the league. He is going to really help New Jersey spring their forwards up the ice and be in a position to create chances.

The New Jersey Devils need their best players to have chemistry with each other.

The fact that Hamilton had instant chemistry with the team’s best offensive player is a great sign right off the bat. These two are going to be relied on heavily for the next half-decade or more so seeing it start up this quickly is nice. They are going to, although they play different positions, create a lot of magic out there together.

If New Jersey starts to see Jack Hughes become one of those top-20 NHL forwards and Nico Hischier continues to be a top-30 centerman, they will be in good shape. Mix in the Norris Trophy level skill of Dougie Hamilton and you have a great core budding. If Jesper Bratt, Yegor Sharangovich, and Janne Kuokkanen take more steps this year, they could have something really special.

When Hughes and Hamilton are on the ice together in 2021-22, you can expect some big things. If this chemistry holds up all season long, you may even see them make a push towards the postseason. Hopefully, these two keep it up so we can watch some great hockey this year.
