The New Jersey Devils took an early 2-1 lead against the Washington Capitals in their first preseason game of the season. There were dead parts of the first period, but for the most part, Yegor Sharangovich and Jack Hughes have been an electric pairing. These two might be ready to breakout like everyone is predicting.

Yegor Sharangovich started the fun. He took an amazing pass from across the ice from former 1st-round pick Alexander Holtz. It was an awesome goal, and it was a great way to start the season off.

It’s a goal we want to watch again and again. The Devils would eventually give up the tying goal after going on the power play, so that’s not a great look for the team’s special teams, but shortly after intermission, Jack Hughes was at it again.

That play was just disgusting in the best way. He got in front of a pass by Michal Kempny and put a backhand right under the bar. That is Steph Curry-like accuracy from that shot. Hughes was able to make this play amazing. He is once again a takeaway machine, and now it looks like he’s added a shooting skill.

The Devils are clearly going to keep Sharangovich and Hughes together this season. They look like they are already in midseason form against the Washington Capitals, a team the Devils struggled against last season (an understatement, I know).

These two just need to find the right player to be on their wing. Is it Alexander Holtz, who Ruff gave the assignment today? How about Janne Kuokkanen who spent most of the second half with them last season? Could it be Tomas Tatar, who has been on that line at times during the preseason? It’s a question the Devils will answer sooner rather than later, and Holtz seems to have the inside edge.
