Bold Prediction #1: Alex Holtz and Dawson Mercer make this roster

Alexander Holtz and Dawson Mercer have been incredible this preseason. Yes, it’s only two games, but it is telling that Lindy Ruff has had them both in the lineup for both games. In both games, Holtz and Mercer made a huge impact.

One goal by Mercer imparticular showed what he can bring to the table. Yes, it was already 6-1 and the game was basically over, but he’s trying to showcase himself, and he did just that. The puck came of the Rangers’ defenseman’s stick, and instead of going after it gung ho, he poked it away to give him some room to work. That led to a breakaway where he made a stunning move to beat the goalie and score.

Holtz himself has been showcasing what he does best to start the season. Mostly, it’s his incredible shot that has him standing out among the rest. His wrister is lethal. He has a good slap shot, but that wrister comes off like a rocket.

It’s telling that the Devils have been pairing Holtz with Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes in his first two games. He is getting time with the top line in both preseason games. Mercer hasn’t exactly had the same luck with linemates, but that should change. Both players are earning roster spots, and the Devils need to give them what they deserve.
