Late last week, the Switzerland Olympic team named their three players to their roster for the 2022 Games in Beijing, China. Every hockey country has announced three players that are going to be there and Nico Hischier is the only New Jersey Devils to be named so far. He was named along with Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and Timo Meier of the San Jose Sharks.

Right off the bat, people won’t necessarily be scared of the Swiss Olympic Hockey Team. They aren’t one of the world powers like Team USA, Canada, Russia, Finland, and Sweden. There are even teams like the Czech Republic and Germany to worry about. However, the Swiss are going to be a very good team.

Hischier deserves to be one of the three players named. Besides Josi, who will likely be their captain, Hischier is the best Swiss player in the National Hockey League. He is certainly the best forward. It is really cool to see a New Jersey Devils player gain so much recognition.

Hischier had a tough year last year. After the NHL returned from COVID-19, the Devils weren’t invited to the bubble. When they returned in January, Hischier was dealing with an offseason injury that kept him out for a long time.

When he returned, there was a C on his sweater signifying that he is the new captain of the Devils. Unfortunately, he didn’t manage to play in many games after that as another freak injury took him out. A P.K. Subban slapshot hit him in the face, and back to the IR he went. He did finish the season strong, however, as he ended with six goals and five assists for 11 points in 21 games.

Hischier was never able to get into a rhythm but the hope is that he will be able to this year. Ahead of the Olympics, he should be more than ready to go represent his country. Hopefully, that means that the New Jersey Devils are having a good season with Hischier leading the way.

The New Jersey Devils are hoping that Nico Hischier has a huge year in 2021-22.

When the Olympics do roll around, you can expect Hischier to get a lot of praise. He isn’t from a country with a lot of hockey stars so every game will see him as one of the featured stories. It should be a lot of fun to watch.

As for Team USA here at home, Patrick Kane and Seth Jones of the Chicago Blackhawks were named along with Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are likely going to be a better team than the Swiss but you never know what happens in a short tournament like that.
