The New Jersey Devils had an eventful month of October. What did fans learn about the team during the first month of the NHL season?

It’s hard to really put a grade or an evaluation on the first month of the New Jersey Devils season. They played the first five games of the season at home, but they only had seven games this entire month. For context, the Devils have 14 games in the month of November. It is going from one month where it seemed like there was a week in between games to a month with only three breaks that are more than a day.

The Devils still learned a lot about this team over the first month. The main reason was because of the injuries. Jack Hughes was the most significant injury, and he is likely out until December at least. Miles Wood is apparently out longer than Hughes. The Devils at one time was without both of their starting goalies, but luckily they at least got Jonathan Bernier back. Mackenzie Blackwood tried to test out his surgically-repaired heel in the preseason, but it turns out he was not ready to go and hasn’t made a start yet. They’ve also been without Damon Severson and Ty Smith at times.

What have we learned about the New Jersey Devils in October?

That many injuries will force any team to learn a lot about themselves, but this is also a brand new Devils team. They added Bernier, Hamilton, Tomas Tatar, Ryan Graves, and Dawson Mercer to the team in the offseason. They are all having a significant role in the Devils starting the season with a winning record.

There’s is so much still to learn about the New Jersey Devils this season, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t learned a lot in the first month.
