The New Jersey Devils came into their game against the Philadelphia Flyers searching for answers. They hadn’t won since the last time that they played the Flyers on November 28th which spans four games. Well, they defeated the Flyers by a final score of 3-0 in a game that everyone hopes get them back on track.
There were many great performances in this game but there is one forward line that deserves a lot of credit. The line considered the top line for the game was the trio of Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, and Pavel Zacha. After the first period ended in a 0-0 tie, it was clear that this group would connect at some point.
At 5:30 of the second period, Jesper Bratt did not miss with his wicked shot after Nico Hischier made a sweet pass to find him in a good scoring area. That goal would stand as the game-winner for New Jersey as they didn’t allow a goal all game.
Bratt also assisted on Dawson Mercer‘s power-play goal as the second unit was able to get one. It isn’t the line with Hischier and Zacha that scored the goal but it echoes the fact that Bratt was really feeling good in this one.
Pavel Zacha also scored an awesome goal later in the period as his linemates worked hard down low to create the chance but it was waved off for offsides. It certainly wasn’t controversial as the right call was made after the video review. Even though it was taken away, it was an outstanding effort from this line.
The New Jersey Devils need its leaders to step up big in all three zones.
Jack Hughes made a great play to find Michael McLeod for his first goal of the season into an empty net to secure the win for New Jersey. As mentioned before, everyone helped but the top line really led the way in terms of chances and overall play.
Everyone on the team could find another level offensively. It is something that the New Jersey Devils need to see in order for them to take the next step as a rebuilding organization. So far, besides Hughes, these three forwards on this top-line have to lead the way there.
Getting this win over Philly was huge. They are on a big losing streak just like the Devils were and they have a significantly bleaker future. With some of these young players that the Devils have, you can even be excited about what will come next. Their next chance to impress will come on Friday against the Nashville Predators.
