The New Jersey Devils have reached a new low, even for them. They were so good in the first period against the Toronto Maple Leafs that they got Toronto’s goalie Jack Campell pulled. Even though the Leafs are significantly better than the Devils, it was a game that the Devils absolutely should have been able to hold onto and win.

Unfortunately, in typical Devils fashion, they blew it. It was 4-2 Devils going into the third period which is usually a situation where even the worst teams can hang on. However, Jason Spezza ended an 11 game goal drought with his tally at 4:16 of the third.

Later, Mitch Marner extended his career-high goal-scoring streak to six games. It was an amazing play by Auston Matthews who also had a hat trick in the game himself (his second straight hatty against the Devils). This happened at 13:28 of the third period which left plenty of time for New Jersey heartbreak.

In the very late stages of the third period, Ilya Mikeyev scored a short-handed goal off a nice feed from Alexander Kerfoot to give the Leafs a 5-4 lead. Matthews completed the aforementioned hat trick by throwing one into the empty net, giving the Leafs a 6-4 victory.

The New Jersey Devils continue to blow games and lose in heartbreaking fashion

This is a new low. As mentioned before, the Leafs are better but the Devils are good enough to not blow leads like that late in the game. It was as devastating a loss as the Devils have had in years. It finally looked like they were going to break the losing streak and it was coming against a very good team.

Something is wrong with this team. Lindy Ruff, Mackenzie Blackwood, and Dougie Hamilton are all away from the team due to different situations but that is no excuse for this team to lose a game like this. It was just disgusting to see it pan out the way that it did. Each and every member of this organization should be disgusted with the way that things have gone.

Now, luckily for the Devils (not really), they get the Toronto Maple Leafs again on Tuesday night. This time it will be at the Prudential Center but it isn’t like home ice is an advantage for the team. The Devils like losing games in heartbreaking fashion no matter where they are. ‘

This is as bad as it has ever been with no end in sight. There are good players there that make spectacular plays but the team around them just doesn’t click. It is hard to tell how to fix it but it better get fixed soon.
