Timo Meier

The San Jose Sharks aren’t the basement dwellers they’ve been in seasons past, but a trade of Timo Meier still makes sense. Meier is one year away from restricted free agency, and they already have a few huge contracts on the books. However, it’s not like the Sharks are facing a cap constraint. They have $20 million in space this offseason and $37 million in space next offseason.

They also have a big player going into free agency. Tomas Hertl is an unrestricted free agent, and there are reports both sides would love a reunion. Money is obviously the mitigating factor of this situation. The Sharks also have some other contracts to give out, including one to defenseman Mario Ferraro (a player they took with the pick they got in the Mirco Mueller trade).

There’s no real push for the Sharks to trade Meier right now, but seeing a top-five pick fall into their lap after losing one a few years ago in the Erik Karlsson trade might be enough to get them to consider the move. Meier has shown immense chemistry in the past with Nico Hischier, and he could hit career highs with his fellow Swiss native.

This one makes a lot of sense for the Devils, especially because of Meier’s age. He’s only 25 years old, so the Devils would be getting him mid-prime. They need a few players like that since most of their stars are still pre-prime age outside of Jesper Bratt and obviously Hamilton.
