The New Jersey Devils are a bad team this season. There are plenty of reasons why. We won’t get into the reasons they are bad because we all see them every other night. However, one person who is far to blame for this season is Jesper Bratt. He has been sensational all season long.
Bratt leads New Jersey in scoring with 18 goals and 30 assists for 48 points in 47 games. Only Jack Hughes has more points per game. This says a lot about Bratt’s production this season. He makes an impact on the offense in each and every game.
Not many people have proven that they can play on a line with both Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier. Most only do well with one or the other. Part of what makes Bratt special is his ability to play with either of them depending on the situation.
There are some rumblings on Twitter dot com about the Devils trading him before the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline. That would be one of the worst mistakes that the Devils could make at this time. The only way it would be somewhat worth it is if they landed some draft/prospect capital in addition to one of the good young goalies in the game.
Trading Jesper Bratt would be a bad idea for the New Jersey Devils right now.
Bratt is set to get a major pay upgrade soon. That is a risk because you have to be sure that he is going to continue producing at this pace to pay him what he might be worth on the market. It seems pretty obvious at this point that he is going to continue playing well as his career progresses.
He burst onto the scene in 2017-18 when the Devils had a good fun team. He was a 6th-round pick in the NHL Draft and has produced like a 1st-rounder. Only Alex DeBrincat of the Chicago Blackhawks has more points of players from that draft taken outside of the 1st round.
This team just can’t get rid of Bratt for no reason. There are reports the Devils are looking to shuffle the deck, but doing that with Bratt isn’t the smartest move. They have some glaring holes that need to be fixed but they have a nice young core building and Bratt is a big part of it. Outside of Hischier and Hughes, it is hard to claim that any of the other young players are more important.
If the Devils were smart, they would go for a goalie in a different way. There are plenty of ways to build a team the right way and trading one of your best offensive players just to “change things up” is not one of them.
