The New Jersey Devils are looking at what deals could be possible at the NHL Trade Deadline. A new report says P.K. Subban might be the only piece moved.

There aren’t a lot of guarantees for the New Jersey Devils during the NHL Trade Deadline. There are rumors tying Damon Severson, Jesper Bratt, and Pavel Zacha to deals, but that’s hardly anything with major substance. A recent article in The Athletic had Tom Fitzgerald saying the team hasn’t had a lot of calls on their players. That’s surprising. One player he made clear could be dealt at the deadline is P.K. Subban.

Subban has been an admirable player on the Devils since he was traded almost three years ago now. He is great in the community, which Tom Fitzgerald goes over. Subban did everything he was asked to do. He was the top minutes man in his first two seasons, then he transitioned to a lower-line role this year when the Devils signed Dougie Hamilton. He did it all while only saying great things about the Devils organization and the state of New Jersey as a whole.

It just makes sense for the Devils to trade P.K. Subban at this point. He’s in the final year of his contract. He makes $9 million per season, and he will likely go to a situation where he is more coveted. It’s not like the Devils didn’t covet him in their time, but with Damon Severson and now Hamilton on the books next season, there’s nowhere to go but the third line for Subban.

The New Jersey Devils could get something decent in a P.K. Subban deal.

The Devils know they are going to have to eat some of Subban’s contract in any deal. He’s making too much money for any team to take on the salary cap expense. So, the Devils will have to eat at least half, and they might be forced to call on another team to eat even more. That could diminish the value they get. However, these three types of moves are still realistic.
