4. Seamus Casey – University of Michigan
The New Jersey Devils are trying to dominate the University of Michigan blueline. They already have Luke Hughes, who is set to be the Wolverine’s top defenseman on the team next season. They also have Ethan Edwards, who is primed to have a bigger role after an impressive first season with Michigan. Now, the Devils drafted Seamus Casey in the second round after a positive stint with the U.S. National Development Program.
Casey is someone who’s shown immense skill from the backend. He’s another right-handed shot, adding to what was a weakness in the Devils prospect pool but quickly became a strength. Casey is missing a little size that most would want out of a defenseman, but he has so much going for him that he’s going to be incredibly fun to watch. Casey will do really well at this prospect camp, as long as everything goes his way.
Casey is going to a good place in Michigan where he can grow. Being around other Devils prospects will only help in the long term. As for this week, he is going to make plays that make us wish he would make the Devils right away. Don’t rush it. He’s not there yet, but there are moments where he looks like it.
This is going to be a great experience for Casey. This is a week where we can really see the kind of steal the Devils got in the second round. He’s still incredibly young, so expect to see some mistakes. However, also expect to see some great plays.
