The Colorado Avalanche are one of the best teams in the NHL. As the defending Stanley Cup champions, they are as good and hard to beat as anyone. That is why the New Jersey Devils‘ win over the might already be their signature win of the season.

Not only did they beat them, but they also shut them out. They didn’t allow one goal to a team loaded with superstars like Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Mikko Rantanen, amongst others. It was an outstanding game plan to keep their offense at bay.

Vitek Vanecek deserves a lot of credit for this performance. He made 24 saves on 24 shots. Although the Devils played a solid defensive game against the Avalanche, he had t be amazing when his name was called to make a huge save. He should be feeling very good about it.

New Jersey’s amazing defensive effort did come at the cost of some offensive opportunities as they are used to outshooting their opponents by a lot. This time, they only got 23 shots on the Avalanche netminder Pavel Francouz.

The New Jersey Devils may have had their signature win on Friday night.

The good news is that they scored one power-play goal, which allowed them to take the 1-0 win. Part of what makes this a signature win is that all of their best players played a big role, but Jack Hughes played the biggest role.

Nico Hischier didn’t collect an assist on the goal, but we know how he helps with puck possession, which leads to chances, especially on the power play. Dougie Hamilton found Jesper Bratt, who made an outstanding pass to Hughes, who did not miss his shot.

Having players like this is amazing and something that is going to help the Devils win a lot of hockey games. Hughes has game-breaking abilities, and they have been on display lately.

We know he will collect his assists but seeing a puck go in the net for him in two straight games is just what the doctor ordered. He, along with the other offensive players on this team, should be off to the races now.

Another player that deserves individual praise is John Marino. He didn’t chip in on the scoresheet, but he was still named the third star of the game behind Vanecek and Hughes, who had the shutout and game winner respectively.

Marino was so good defensively against some elite players that he deserves this recognition. If he can keep playing like this all season long, the other offensive-minded players on the ice will be able to focus their game on attacking.

The Devils can’t soak in this win for a long time. It is just one of 82 games, and there is a long way to go before anybody can be too confident in this team. Their next test is against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday afternoon.
