Martin Brodeur last played in a New Jersey Devils jersey on April 13, 2014. He beat the Boston Bruins prior to testing the free agency market of 2014. That was almost 10 years ago. Yet, for some reason, Brodeur’s name continues to be the topic of conversation today.

Brodeur will always be part of the conversation because of the argument for the greatest goalie in NHL history. Brodeur, Patrick Roy, and Dominik Hasek are constantly being argued. Every so often, Henrik Lundqvist, Roberto Luongo, and Carey Price get themselves in the same conversation, but that’s preposterous. Often, analysts play revisionist history, saying Brodeur was overrated, but most advanced stats only cover the worst part of his career.

Alex Ovechkin had a lot to say about Martin Brodeur in a new documentary.

However, Brodeur was once again in the topic of conversation in a negative light. This time, it was courtesy of Alexander Ovechkin.

As of this writing, this quote had over 700,000 views on Twitter. So, we wanted to see the full context of the quote. It comes from the ESPN documentary “GR8TNESS” that aired over All-Star weekend. He did mention that other goalies also complained, but Martin Brodeur was the only one he mentioned by name.

As it says, this was in 2006. This is 17 years ago, and Ovechkin still feels the need to bring it back up for a documentary about his run toward the goal record. He’s chasing Wayne Gretzky, but he still feels the need to punch up.

Brodeur won’t go away any time soon. The “greatest of all time” debates will always be there. He also works for the New Jersey Devils front office, so that will keep him in the public eye. However, it’s surprising when a current superstar player still has something negative to say. Ovechkin comes off a little strange still talking about his visor and blaming a goalie so many years later.
