New Jersey Devils Dominated Chicago Blackhawks On Saturday Night
The New Jersey Devils entered the weekend coming off a huge win over their Hudson River Rivals in the New York Rangers. It was an outstanding way for them to keep the momentum going as they head toward the postseason.
They took on the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Saturday night. Chicago is one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League, and they have the first overall pick on their mind more than anything.
The game had an interesting start. New Jersey dominated play, but both goaltenders (Mackenzie Blackwood and Alex Stalock) played well, so they went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.
Dougie Hamilton gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead in the second period. He became the first defenseman in franchise history to score 20 goals. It has been a magnificent year for him in every way.
Unfortunately, the Hawks scored two goals after that, giving them a 2-1 lead. Although the Devils were dominating the game, they were down and needed to kick it into another gear.
They did just that. Timo Meier made an amazing play to find Erik Haula. He scored for the third game in a row. It was a very nice way to get this game tied again. After that, New Jersey took over for good.
The New Jersey Devils needed a big effort to pull off the win in Chicago.
It was Jack Hughes’ turn to make a play as he danced around a bit before finding Jesper Boqvist, who scored a sensational goal to give them the lead back.
Ryan Graves wanted to join in on the fun as he did something not many people even knew he could do. He walked a Chicago defender and made a silky move to score a goal on the backhand.
It was one of the nicest goals scored by a Devil this season, and it came from a defensive defenseman. It goes to show that everyone in the NHL is supremely skilled.
Chicago made it interesting by getting one back. Jonathan Toews, who was returning after dealing with the impacts of Long Covid, made an outstanding pass to find Andreas Athanasiou in front, who buried his 16th of the season.
Timo Meier got it back with a sweet wraparound goal. There may not have ever been a Devil before him as good at scoring goals with that move, and he hasn’t even been there that long yet. He was a beast in this game in every way.
Nico Hischier made an outstanding play for Dawson Mercer to put the game away with an empty netter. New Jersey won the game by a final score of 6-3. They are still alive in the race for the Metropolitan Division title as they prepare for big-time playoff games.
This was an outstanding game for them although there was a slight bump in the road. That Chicago team plays very hard every night and they gave it to the Devils at times but the better team won pretty handily.
Now, the Devils will be back in action again on Sunday night as they are up in Canada to take on the Winnipeg Jets. They will try to make it a season in which they collect a win in every Canadian city. That’s a fun feat we didn’t think possible at the beginning of the season.
