New Jersey Devils Will Play Stadium Series Game Next Season
The New Jersey Devils are back outside to play a hockey game. First reported by Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Devils will play in a Stadium Series game in the 2023-24 season. The Devils will likely be home against the Philadelphia Flyers in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
There is no date yet for the game to get played, but we know it will be played in February. Just a few months ago, the rumors began to swirl when NHL Network reporter Kevin Weekes posted a tweet about the potential stadium series game and how the Devils could be involved.
The Devils have not played a Stadium Series game since the 2013-14 season when they played the New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium. The Devils ended up losing that game 7-3. This will be only the second time the Devils have played a Stadium Series game in franchise history.
The game will allow the young core to experience a tradition many teams have had throughout the league. However, some guys on the roster have experience playing outdoor games. Dougie Hamilton and Tomas Tatar have played in a Winter Classic with their former teams, the Bruins and Red Wings. Erik Haula also provided a three-point performance in an outdoor game against the Blackhawks in 2016.
As for which part of the young core can significantly impact this game, I believe that will go to Erik Haula. Haula has become that veteran leader that the Devils are looking for. While Haula may not have provided in the playoffs that much, he still did an excellent job in the regular season. When paired with Jack Hughes, both players provided great production. As mentioned earlier, he has experience with the Stadium Series game as well. Once the Stadium Series game comes, he could put on an excellent performance with Jack Hughes as his wing, and both can provide a lot of chances against the Flyers.
