2. Craig Smith
When looking at the Devils, there is still a place to add someone on the fourth line. Curtis Lazar is going to be out a while, and Nathan Bastian is just returning. Bastian looked good against the Blackhawks, but the team could use someone who could play center. Smith is currently on the Blackhawks fourth line, and he already has six goals there.
As with just about everyone on the fourth line in the league, Smith's scoring has been inconsistent. He had three goals in October, two in November, and he scored one in the first four games of December. Yet, that scoring is better than what the Devils have been getting from the fourth line so far this season.
Smith is a much older player, coming in at 35 years old. He would immediately be the oldest player on the Devils roster. That's not necessarily a problem, but the Devils couldn't make this the gem acquisition. He's not the player he used to be when he was constantly scoring 20+ goals a season. He's having a better season than he's had, but if he breaks 15 goals it would be remarkable.
This would be a depth trade if anything. Smith is here for a good time, not a long time. Still, this feels like the type of move that could pay dividends during a big moment in the playoffs.
