3 fun ideas for future New Jersey Devils outdoor games

The Winter Classic takes place on Tuesday with the Chicago Blackhawks taking on the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. The New Jersey Devils played the Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium last year, but there are some fun places the league could take the game in the future.

One of the greatest moments for the New Jersey Devils in 2024 was the Stadium Series win against the Philadelphia Flyers. MetLife Stadium was electric as the Devils showed exactly what they could be in front of the entire league. That day was most Devils fans' favorite of the year, even with all the winning the Devils have been doing this season.

The Devils will likely be in future outdoor games because of the players they have on the roster. Mainly, Jack Hughes will get to be front and center for the league. One of the biggest American stars in the league playing in the shadow of New York City will be enticing for the league.

However, with MetLife off the board, where else could the Devils play an outdoor game? We try to get a little creative to find the Devils’ next location.

1. SHI Stadium
Piscataway, New Jersey

We start with the home of the birthplace of college football. Okay, we know Princeton and Rutgers didn’t play football in the stadium per se, but that game took place just down the street. There is history on the Rutgers campus, and playing an outdoor hockey game at SHI Stadium does make a lot of sense.

The stadium itself actually looks like it would be really good for hockey. Unlike some college stadiums which are way too big, Rutgers’ stadium would give really good sightlines to everyone in their seats. It’s also in Piscataway, which is in the aptly named Middlesex County. This would make it very easy for people across the state to make it to the game.

This is the obvious choice, as this is the only other large stadium in the state of New Jersey. SHI Stadium holds a capacity of 52,454. That is enough for the NHL to call this a major success. Would it be a Winter Classic? Probably not, but the NHL would be happy to hold another Stadium Series between the Rangers and Devils here.
