3. Cayden Primeau
Cayden Primeau might be the worst goalie in the NHL with at least 10 starts. Why would the Devils go after a player like this? There are a few reasons, but we’ll start with what he did last season. In 23 games, Primeau had a .910 save percentage. What happened between last season and this season to make the 25-year-old drop close to 80 points on his save percentage?
This would be a nothing project that the Devils could just try. Would Primeau cost more than future considerations for the Devils? They could send Primeau to the AHL after a trade, hoping nobody would claim him on waivers. Honestly, the Canadiens might be putting him on waivers soon as Jakub Dobes returned from injury and seems like he’s NHL ready.
The Devils could use goalie depth. They need players to help in Utica and someone to make life easier for the team if either Jacob Markstrom or Jake Allen and Nico Daws has to play in the NHL. Primeau could do that.
It’s not a conventional move, and Primeau might be cooked, but it’s a low-risk move. It’s basically a no-risk move unless we end up caring about the Utica Comets again. It brings depth to a position the Devils don’t have right now from a guy who is just 25 years old.
