2. Brian Dumoulin
We talked about the Cody Glass trade, but the trade package doesn't come close to what the Devils sent to the Anaheim Ducks for Brian Dumoulin. They traded a second-round pick and highly-touted prospect Herman Traff. The trade wasn't received well by the Devils fanbase.
It makes sense why Devils fans would question why the biggest trade package was reserved for a veteran defenseman. While, yes, the Devils needed help on the blue line with Jonas Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton out, there's not future there for the position. They have long-term deals given to five guys, and the sixth is Luke Hughes. This doesn't even include prospects Simon Nemec and Seamus Casey.
Dumoulin has been good for the Devils, and he's even scored an overtime goal to give the Devils their only win in their last five games. He's been good for New Jersey, and teams are definitely paying attention. He's a veteran defenseman with two Stanley Cups while with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Teams will prioritize that.
Yet, if he performs in the playoffs, more teams will line up and raise his price. The Devils likely won't be able to afford him, and hopefully won't have a need with Siegenthaler returning, but Dumoulin could cash in on a big playoff performance.
