2. Dawson Mercer
Dawson Mercer has 23 points in 52 games, putting him on pace for just 36 points in a full season. That’s disappointing coming from a player who put up 56 points in his sophomore season two years ago and was just short of a 30-goal season. After a down season last year with just 33 points, we hoped Mercer would have an explosive season this year. He has just four points in the last 14 games. With Hischier out, the time is now for Mercer to step up.
Mercer moved from wing to center in Hischier’s absence. He spends most of his time at wing for the Devils, but this is where the team needs him right now. Face-offs are not Mercer’s strong suit. He has won 42.9% of his face-offs this year compared to Hischier’s 55.5%. But with Hischier out, Haula out, and Jack Hughes’ face-off ability limited due to his finger, Mercer has to step up. Additionally, his durability has been an important asset to the team. He has not missed a game during his four-year NHL career. If Mercer gets something going over the next few games, that can go a long way in filling the hole at center.
