3 New Jersey Devils players who should not be on the roster next season

Unfortunately for the New Jersey Devils, the Carolina Hurricanes eliminated them in Game 5 of their first-round series. With the Devils' season now over and taking free agency into account, here's three players who should not be on the 2025-26 roster.

2. Erik Haula

If you're in the NHL and are 34 years old with over a decade of league experience, odds are you should be able to score more than 11 goals in a season. That is, unless you are Erik Haula in 2024-25.

Haula has been more of a supporting cast member for New Jersey since he came to the Devils via trade prior to the 2022-23 season. He was rewarded after that season with a three-year deal worth $3.15M AAV. Since then, he's been fairly unproductive and not exactly a major star of the roster.

1. Dougie Hamilton

Now, defenseman Dougie Hamilton's long-term injury certainly put a damper on the season. Particularly when you consider his reduced role with the team, he may just be the player that the Devils move on from.

Hamilton is not an effective player in the league; this is demonstrated by the 40 points he recorded when healthy (64 games played) across 31 assists and nine goals. But — a lot of what he brings, the Devils already get from "Snoopy Hughes." Combine this with the facts that Hamilton's full no movement clause is actually going to adjust to include a modified no-trade clause, as well as him being 31 years old, and perhaps he really is destined to not return.
