Playing to their strengths
The Devils seem to be locking down and fortifying the team's identity through effective play at even strength and on the PK.
Of the 11 goals scored during the win streak, nine of those have come at even strength, and the team is also out-chancing opponents 64-56. Despite a Corsi For just under 50%, the Devils are recording 53.1% of high-danger chances at 5v5, so the skaters are choosing their opportunities wisely.
The penalty kill, meanwhile, has been perfect on five chances, even shutting down the Oilers' lethal PP that ranks fifth-best in the league. Even better is that the Devils have managed to be disciplined -- the team usually averages 2.79 penalties per game on the season.
There's some room for improvement on the power play, which is 2-for-9 and failed to convert on three opportunities on Thursday night. That can be forgiven as the team continues to figure out what units can contribute the most on the man advantage with some new pieces in the mix.
All in all, this winning streak bodes well for how the team could perform come playoff time. Strong play at even strength, fewer penalties, consistent offense and limited shots against -- all of these factor into what makes a winning playoff team, and it's encouraging to see flashes of what the Devils are capable of.
