2. Matt Duchene
Another possible center option for the Devils is Matt Duchene. He is coming off a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars. Financially, the ability to make a move like this really depends on what else the Devils do in the offseason. Although he’s 34, Duchene’s 2024-25 season showed there’s plenty left in the tank. He scored 30 goals and had a career-high 52 assists.
Duchene is better than being a 3C, but he would give the Devils some flexibility in the event of injuries at the position. He can also shift over to wing. Putting him on a line with Jack Hughes could be a recipe for success.
There’s a good chance, though, that Duchene won’t be available. He fits in well with the Stars, and following a lengthy playoff run, it feels like they probably want to keep him around. Should he decide to test free agency, the Devils should at least make a call.
3. Radek Faksa
If the Devils decide to roll with Erik Haula or Dawson Mercer at 3C, a 4C upgrade would be a must. Radek Faksa is a possible 4C candidate. The 31-year-old is coming off a five-year contract, most of which was spent with the Dallas Stars, with the final year being with the St. Louis Blues.
While Faksa won’t give them much in the way of offense, his defensive responsibility and faceoff capabilities are a plus. He won a career-high 57% of his faceoffs in 2024-25. The Devils could really use a center who can give them an edge at winning faceoffs.
St. Louis is interested in keeping Faksa around, but no deal has materialized yet. As a depth role player, his veteran presence and consistency are appreciated. Should he be available, Faksa is a good option for a team looking for a 4C.
