3 ways New Jersey Devils can keep their playoff spot without Jack Hughes

On Sunday night, the New Jersey Devils had a double whammy of losing Jack Hughes to what looks like a major injury. He went hard into the boards, and he immediately left the game for good. While this is devastating, the Devils can still make the playoffs.

3. Call up everyone possible from Utica

The Utica Comets actually haven’t had any issue scoring this year. After a dreadful start, the Comets have been playing well. They just won all three games during the weekend, and they have an outside shot at playoff contention. They are mostly doing it on their offense and tenacity.

There are a few players who could have NHL-level offensive value. The time is now for them to show it.

Brian Halonen is the most important name here. He has 19 goals this year in 44 games. He had a spell with the Devils earlier this season and didn’t look out of place. Most said he didn’t get enough of a chance to really impact the team. Give him a chance while players like Curtis Lazar and Nathan Bastian fail to add anything offensively.

They also have Adam Beckman, Nolan Foote, Mike Hardman, and Ryan Schmelzer. Hold a tryout session in Utica and let them all showcase their offensive skills to the Devils’ scouts. Whoever comes out on top joins Halonen in the NHL. This is where the Devils should be throwing offense at the problem. It is not helping this team to lose games 1-0 or 2-1. They need to put the puck in the net with this level of goaltending.
