4. Jack Campbell
We know the New Jersey Devils had interest in Jack Campbell before he signed his five-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. The Devils dodged a bullet on that deal, as he was at one point the worst goalie in the NHL. However, after he was embarrassingly demoted to the AHL and eventually bought out by the Oilers, he has played well. He has six games under his belt this year with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. He has a .917 save percentage there, the same SV% he had with the Bakersfield Condors last season.
The Devils would be find to give Campbell a chance to play in the NHL, which would give him a shot to prove he’s still an NHL goalie. He is playing well in the AHL, but until he’s doing it in the big leagues, other teams will be hesitant to give him another one-way contract. His salary is based on those contracts, and at 33 years old, he has to think he has some time left in his career.
Would the Red Wings make this trade? There are a few reasons they might do it. The Devils are not really competition for them, as they seem to be playing for positioning in the top three of the Metropolitan Division. They also have their goalies of the present and future with Villie Husso, Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and rookie Sebastian Cossa.
