It is still early in training camp for the New Jersey Devils, but Anthony Mantha is already getting an interesting opportunity. The newly signed forward has been getting a look alongside Jack Hughes, and if that continues, it could be a pretty good situation for both players. Hughes is one of the most talented players on the Devils, while Mantha brings a different type of game that could work well alongside him.
Mantha is coming off a good season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he showed that he can still be a productive offensive player. After dealing with injuries and some inconsistency earlier in his career, he was able to find his game and contribute offensively when he was in the lineup. Now he has a chance to play alongside Hughes and potentially give himself even more opportunities to produce.
Anthony Mantha could be the perfect linemate for Jack Hughes
The biggest thing that stands out about the pairing is the size Mantha brings. Hughes is at his best when he has the puck and is creating plays, and having a bigger winger beside him who can get to the net and finish chances could open up more space for him. Mantha doesn't need to have the puck all the time either, which could allow Hughes to play his game while Mantha looks for open ice and chances around the net.
That could end up being a really good fit for both players. Hughes would have a bigger target to find when he creates chances, while Mantha would be playing with a center who can create opportunities that not every player can. And let's not forget that the third member of that line would be Jesper Bratt. He is a very talented player in his own right. If the Devils’ new-look top line can gel together, it has the potential to be something special.
That said, there is still a long way to go before the Devils decide what their lines will look like. Training camp is about trying different combinations, so there is no guarantee Mantha stays with Hughes when the regular season begins. Still, it is something worth watching because there is a pretty obvious reason why New Jersey is giving the pairing a look.
Mantha has the chance to come to New Jersey and play an important role alongside one of the best young centers in the NHL. Hughes, meanwhile, gets another potential scoring option on his wing. We could be in for Hughes’ best season in the NHL yet.
