Betting markets are finally giving the New Jersey Devils the respect they deserve

The New Jersey Devils have always been given the benefit of the doubt in the betting markets, but it seems like that's no longer the case in the post-Stanley Cup odds for 2027.

Every year, the New Jersey Devils are a bad bet. They have been one of the biggest disappointments in the league for… well… like 15 years now. We expect more of this franchise, and recently, the disappointment has been even bigger.

For a team that’s stacked down the middle with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, plus superstar complimentary pieces in Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier, and Dougie Hamilton, this should be a team that’s dominating every season. Instead, they can’t even make the playoffs with consistency in a league where half the teams make the postseason.

Despite that, oddsmakers have given the Devils the benefit of the doubt every year. And bettors have followed suit. Heck, one of the coaches in the Stanley Cup Final picked the Devils to win the Cup this season. Analysts just continue to believe in this team, and that’s impacted the betting markets.

In fact, as late as December of this year, after the Quinn Hughes trade, the Devils had better Stanley Cup odds than the Minnesota Wild.

This season, the Devils are given that kind of grace. Many sportsbooks have them at around 30-1 to win the 2027 Stanley Cup. The Devils are once again a decent bet after years of being a bad bet.

The odds have the Devils in the same tier as the Los Angeles Kings and Utah Mammoth. That sounds about right. We don’t know what Sunny Mehta is going to do in his first year, and this team has a lot of work to do before they are contenders. If they do make the right moves, this can be a contender quickly with the way parity works in the NHL, but that’s easier said than done.

The New Jersey Devls are 30-1 to win the 2027 Stanley Cup

They are ahead of some interesting teams, like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and Pittsburgh Penguins. The New York Rangers find themselves near the bottom of the league in betting odds, sitting at 80-1 to win it all.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the favorites to win the Cup again, sitting at 7-1 odds to repeat as champs. The Colorado Avalache are right ahead of them.

With the draft and free agency still a few weeks away, Mehta has an opportunity to really make his mark on the Devils and the betting markets. The former poker player could impact the odds by retaining Nico Hischier and adding serious top-six help. If he gets rid of Jacob Markstrom, that will only help.

The markets are right; the Devils shouldn’t be considered a Stanley Cup contender. But they might not be right for long.
