Bill Guerin's comments on Quinn Hughes have the internet split on the star defenseman's future

When Bill Guerin was asked a question about how negotiations have been going with Quinn Hughes, he didn't have an answer ready. This is obviously something New Jersey Devils fans are paying attention to.

The Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils are in a very familiar position. They are looking at one of their biggest stars with one more year left on his deal and trying to get an extension done. Both teams want to sign these stars for as long as they can get said star to sign for, and they want to do it as quickly as possible, which is July 1st.

The two stars we are referencing are, of course, Nico Hischier and Quinn Hughes. However, there is a difference between how we perceive the negotiations. Hischier’s deal seems to be done. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic first reported that the hard part of the contract is essentially done. Then, Kevin Weekes said on the ESPN broadcast of the NHL Draft that the Devils are essentially in agreement and we’ll learn more on or slightly after July 1st.

With Hughes, we’re grasping at straws. We learned that Bill Guerin flew to New Jersey (lol) to meet with Quinn Hughes in the last few weeks. Wild owner Craig Leipold spoke publicly about how he expects Hughes to sign an extension, with the Wild playing their cards on the table, hoping he signs a five-year deal. Apparently, the eldest Hughes brother wants to sign a three-year deal.

When Guerin gave a media availability after the draft, he was asked about the Hughes negotiations. This seems like it was obviously coming, but Guerin’s response was strange to say the least.

Bill Guerin's comments on Quinn Hughes has raised serious questions about their negotiations

The question is pretty straight forward. Have you spoken to Quinn Hughes's representation? The answer should be an easy yes. This is the Wild's most important offseason decision. Guerin should have a standing 9 a.m. call with Hughes's agent Pat Brisson. They should do everything short of criminal activity to get a deal done by the first week of July.

However, what if this was just Guerin being sarcastic? What if they have a deal done and it's the best-kept secret in hockey? That would be... wild.

The Wild fans are looking at this, especially the sly smile at the end of the video, as a sign this deal is done. Many Devils fans look at this as the Wild losing control of the negotiations. Either way, what's going on in the media doesn't make much sense. It's all very strange, and we can see Quinn Hughes asking for some clarity. He probably has a number and contract length in mind. The Wild likely don't want to walk Quinn Hughes to free agency alongside Jack Hughes.
