Connor Hellebuyck has had an awkward start to his tenure with the Devils. He has made impressive saves but has also committed some significant mistakes. However, the most important aspect is that he holds a 4-0-0 record with New Jersey. Since joining the team from Winnipeg, Hellebuyck's impact has been noticeable, which is an improvement over what the Devils had in goal previously. From here, things can only get better.

Evaluating a player's performance over just four games is a limited approach, but after a challenging start against the St. Louis Blues, it's a suitable time to assess Connor Hellebuyck's initial numbers as a New Jersey Devil. In these four victories, Hellebuyck faced the Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers, and St. Louis Blues. He posted an .891 save percentage and a 2.44 goals-against average, successfully saving 82 of the 92 shots he faced during these games.

In evaluating Connor Hellebuyck's performance in his first few games, the advanced metrics indicate that he has struggled. Hellebuyck has a Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) of -0.8, meaning he has allowed 0.8 more goals than was anticipated. His Goals Above Replacement (GAR) is -0.3, reflecting his performance relative to a replacement-level player.

Connor Hellebuyck's performance has not stood up to expectations, and that's okay

Hellebuyck's high-danger save percentage stands at 82.8%, as he has successfully stopped 24 out of the 29 high-danger shots he faced. In terms of mid-range shots, his save percentage is 83.3%. Notably, he has not yet conceded any long-range goals, having stopped all 16 long-range shots he encountered.

Devils fans shouldn't worry about the best goalie in hockey. He has never started a game with a save percentage below .850, which is considered poor for any goalie who finishes under that mark. We've also seen Hellebuyck perform well in high-danger situations; his save percentage in those circumstances is .821, which is significantly above the average of .809.

The most crucial aspect of the season is how superbly the Devils have performed in front of their goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, effectively making his job significantly easier. New Jersey has been in control of the game in nearly every matchup, ranking third in expected-goal share, second in high-danger chance share, and second in shot share. These statistics highlight their ability to generate quality scoring opportunities while limiting their opponents’ chances.

What stands out is that the Devils are not just good—they are a great hockey team with clear potential to reach even greater heights. Their combination of skill, strategic play, and solid teamwork places them in a formidable position as they continue to develop and refine their game. Fans should be excited about what lies ahead this season, as the team is poised to push for even more success.
