Despite the result, fans were extremely excited to see the latest iteration of the Hughes Bowl

Pucks and Pitchfork's own Jennifer Streeter was onsite at the Prudential Center, talking to various members of the New Jersey Devils' fan base. Here's her own account of what the fans had to say about Monday's Hughes Bowl.

While Monday saw a 4-3 loss for the New Jersey Devils in shootout fashion against the Vancouver Canucks, National Hockey League History was also made.

To be more specific, the Devils won six of the previous eight Hughes Bowl contests. Add the first overtime loss to that list. After covering the Devils' most recent game against the Canucks, Pucks and Pitchforks interviewed fans exiting the Prudential Center about their thoughts on the Hughes Bowl.

For those living under a rock across the league fan base, a Hughes Bowl is any matchup between Vancouver and the Devils. The Canucks are captained by eldest brother, Quinn Hughes. New Jersey's roster features youngest brother Luke Hughes and star center Jack Hughes.

While fans were let down that Jack Hughes wasn't on the ice due to his season-ending shoulder injury and resulting surgery, here's what else they had to say — especially about this being the first-ever Hughes Bowl to go into overtime.

Positive Takeaways from the Fan Base

"There was a particular moment in the third period where Luke was playing defense on Quinn ... It was so cool. I'm speechless about it."
Katie, NJ Devils Fan
"I think it was great. It's always an exciting game. I mean, overtime and then into a shootout? It gets no better than that"
Lea, NJ Devils Fan
"It was really exciting, and both [Quinn and Luke] have a lot of the same qualities, so it's really cool to see them against each other."
Brianna, NJ Devils fan

An Upsetting Result

Just when fans thought things were wrapping up for the 2025 Hughes Bowl, Vancouver's Jake Debrusk tied it up with 36 seconds on the clock. The score remained 3-3 and sent the game into overtime.

Overtime saw an absolutely amazing performance from Devils' goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who stopped 25 for a .893 save percentage by the end of the night and forced a shootout. But it wasn't enough.

After Luke Hughes missed on his first-ever shootout appearance, the Cancuks' Jonathan Lekkerimaki scored the game winner.

"I cannot... believe that they are on a three-loss heater. Right before the playoffs, right before the playoff push. I don't know what's going on in the locker room or on the ice, but they clearly are not coordinated with one another. I just can't believe it. Every time I know that the Devils go into a shootout, it's not likely that they are going to come out as a winner."
Christina, NJ Devils fan

Yes, it's unfortunate for Devils fans that they saw a shootout loss, but those fans who came to New Jersey specifically for the Hughes Bowl witnessed history, and most of those who participated in interviews with me postgame did not talk about the loss. They did not talk about the fact that neither Quinn nor Luke Hughes contributed a point. They talked about how exhilarated they were to see NHL history made and the brothers go one-on-one with each other.
