When the New Jersey Devils selected Nikita Shcherbakov 44th overall in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, it was immediately touted as one of the best value picks in the draft. After all, most outlets had him as a fringe first-round talent, with the Russia factor likely playing a part in why he dropped farther than public analysts believed he would.
After just one month of play, Nikita Shcherbakov himself has solidified that he is deserving of being picked earlier.
The soon-to-be-19-year-old is playing full-time in the KHL, Russia's top league and arguably the second-best league on the planet. It's notoriously difficult for youngsters to break through, particularly when they are highly-touted prospects such as Shcherbakov. Through nine games of play, he has averaged less than 10 minutes per night, only passing double-digit minute deployment on three occasions (and never getting to 11 minutes).
Despite that limited deployment, he has maintained his ability to produce at an impressive rate. He has five points -- two goals and three assists -- in those nine appearances. This is tied for first among all U20 players, matching the likes of Alexander Zharovsky (a top Canadiens winger prospect) while having more than double the production of any other U20 defenseman.
This feat is undeniably impressive -- if Shcherbakov were a forward with that production in those minutes, it would be an excellent development. Doing so as a blueliner conventionally thought of as being defense-first is miraculous.
Shcherbakov's fluid, smooth skating ability has fed much of his success in this regard. He has been surprisingly active in joining the rush, activating into the play off the cycle, and using his legs to transition the puck from his end to the offensive zone. One of his goals came on a net-front drive, where he made a nice move with possession to walk around a defender at the blue line and parked himself in front of the net. There has always been more offense than meets the eye in his game, and he has proved that in a very short span of time.
As the season continues to unfold, Shcherbakov's deployment likely will not change much -- the KHL is truly tough on youngsters. If he is afforded more opportunity, though, look for his production to match it. He certainly has the talent.
