Thursday morning, the New Jersey Devils announced yet another minor-league contract, extending a one-year, two-way deal to 29-year-old center Colin White worth $900,000 at the NHL level and $400,000 at the AHL level.
White, a first-round pick from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, has 323 NHL games under his belt, most recently getting in three games with the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25. Prior to that, he was a full-time NHLer, logging significant time with the Ottawa Senators (224 games) and Florida Panthers (68 games) as well as getting cups of coffee with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens.
All told, in those 323 games, he accrued 44 goals and 113 points. That includes the 2018-19 season in which he scored a career-high 17 goals and 41 total points in 71 games with the Senators while playing in a middle-six role as a 22-year-old. White scored 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) the campaign after, and has not scored as many points in a single season since. He did make a run with the 2022-23 Panthers, though, where he was a staple on their fourth line for their entire regular season and playoff run.
Of course, he isn't that player anymore, but he still has a lot of value at the AHL level. In 2025-26, with the San Jose Barracuda, White scored 21 goals and 48 total points in 46 games and scored one goal in two playoff appearances.
For the Comets, White comes as yet another upgrade up front. They're getting a veteran (now having four of six such spots filled in their lineup) with legitimate NHL experience and playoff pedigree, and one who can help the team offensively as well. It has been a clear point of emphasis for Sunny Mehta and Braden Birch to vastly improve the farm team, and, on paper, they have succeeded thus far.
For the Devils, this also has implications. White is a capable fourth-line plug-and-play guy, having strong defensive metrics in his NHL appearances over the years and a high work ethic. Mehta and Birch have experience with White from his time with the Panthers, so they fully know what he's capable of. This also has implications on the likelihood of Amadeus Lombardi starting the season on the main squad -- with White, Matyas Melovsky, Ryan Schmelzer, Marc McLaughlin, Jack Malone, and Gabe Klassen all centers, there's plenty of down-the-middle depth for the Comets.
This also marks the second time a Colin White has been in the Devils' system -- the first one ended up winning two Cups with the organization.
