Just days prior to the start of their regular season, the New Jersey Devils' official 23-man roster was unveiled Monday afternoon, with the final cuts being shipped to Utica.
Up front, the Devils are carrying the following 14 forwards: Jesper Boqvist, Jesper Bratt, Connor Brown, Luke Evangelista, Cody Glass, Arseny Gritsyuk, Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Amadeus Lombardi, Anthony Mantha, Dawson Mercer, Timo Meier, Stefan Noesen, and Evan Rodrigues.
On defense, the Devils are set to roster Declan Chisholm, Brenden Dillon, Dougie Hamilton, Luke Hughes, Brett Pesce, and Jonas Siegenthaler. They are carrying three goaltenders as well: Jake Allen, Nico Daws, and the recently acquired Remi Poirier. Nick Bjugstad, Seamus Casey, and Johnathan Kovacevic are all beginning the season on injured reserve (IR), though Casey can be sent down anytime without passing through waivers.
After an interesting training camp, there are no real surprises in the New Jersey Devils roster
Perhaps most notably, all three of Boqvist, Lombardi, and Noesen are slated to begin the season on the main roster, with the three of them potentially fighting for a slot as the 12th forward. Right now, it appears as though Lombardi has the advantage there, simply based on how the team has been practicing. The Devils traded for him in June, and he required waivers to be sent down, so it is not at all surprising to see him make the team. Boqvist is seemingly ahead of Noesen on the depth chart, at least according to what we have seen thus far in practice.
Again, unsurprisingly, the Devils are carrying three goaltenders into the campaign. It was a natural logical conclusion after they claimed Poirier from the Dallas Stars on Sunday -- if the Devils were to have used him to hedge a David Rittich claim, Poirier simply would have been immediately picked back up by the Stars organization. The Devils clearly see something in the 24-year-old goalie, a smart bet given his AHL track record and traits.
With the 14 forwards and three goalies, the Devils will enter 2026-27 without an extra defenseman, which is a risk in case of injury. However, Kovacevic's stint on IR should be short-lived, and with that the Devils will have yet another roster decision to make.
