The New Jersey Devils lost to the New York Rangers on Thursday night 4-3 in the shootout. We usually hate losing to the Rangers, but the fact that they tried Topias Vilen in the shootout showed it wasn’t a serious affair. The Devils tried the majority of their AHL roster in the matchup, most of which will be on waivers or sent down to the Utica Comets relatively quickly after this game.
The Devils haven’t made any cuts yet, so the full training camp roster is still intact. With just a week until opening night as of Thursday, expect the cuts to be exorbitant on Friday. There’s only one more preseason game, and it’s time to get the players ready for Utica.
However, one player who was expected to have a huge role with the Comets will start the season on the shelf. Defenseman Seamus Casey suffered an injury during the preseason game, and the initial prognosis was mediocre at best.
Really tough for Seamus who dealt with injuries last year and hasn’t played a regular season game since the end of January.

Worked hard to get back and now this. Hopefully won’t be too long. But that’s a tough blow for the kid.
The injury happened when Casey went to make a hit but went in awkwardly. He immediately limped off the ice and tried to stay on the bench. After a few minutes, he walked down to the tunnel, and we could be seeing a worst-case scenario.

While there was contact, that’s not what caused the injury, which should worry Devils fans. Is it a knee injury or an ankle injury? That will likely decide how bad this could be for Casey.
Casey was expected to be a contributor of some kind for the Devils. He wasn’t going to be in the starting lineup, even with the injury to Johnny Kovacevic. However, he might have been the first call up on the team. He has a lot of value to the Devils.
And this might change any trades the Devils were planning. Whether it was a Quinn Hughes or Connor Hellebuyck trade, Casey was always part of the conversation. The Devils might have to pivot to a different top prospect.
Immediately, the Comets are seriously hurt, and the Devils depth is seriously hurt. Let’s hope the injury isn’t as serious as it looks because this could have been a big season for the young right-handed defenseman.
